Boeing-Boeing
By Marc Camoletti
Translated by Beverley Cross
and Francis Evans
A mile-high comedy
Bernard, a successful architect in swinging sixties Paris, is even more successful with the ladies. In fact, he juggles the hearts of three air hostesses who jet in and out of his groovy bachelor pad: Gloria, Gabriella, and Gretchen—aka “America,” “Italy,” and “Germany.” But when Boeing introduces a faster jet, Bernard’s precise romantic timetable goes hysterically off course and turbulence looms.
Running time: approx. 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission

Audience Comments

—Gloria, Richmond
"What an enjoyable performance! I was laughing so hard I missed some of the other funny things"
—Betty, Delta
"Cast was wonderful. Timing and delivery of play was perfect...kept us laughing the entire time and wanting more! Well done!"
—Helen, Burnaby
"The three of us enjoyed this play so much. It was non-stop laughs. I admire actors who can do such a good job on a comedy. I realize that it is very difficult acting to do well"
—Mardi, New Westminster
"Both my husband and myself enjoyed his hilarious comedy! We would love to see this type of comedy more"
—Naoko, Vancouver
"Really enjoyed the play and had lots of laughs. Acting was splendid, especially the French maid. Thank you"
—Sally, Vancouver
"Hilariously funny! Very entertaining. A really good romp! My wife loved the authentic, classy set design and the fabulous vintage costumes. The casting was perfect"
—Laurence, Vancouver
"Boeing-Boeing provided us with an hilarious and highly entertaining Sunday afternoon. We also accepted the invitation to attend the pre-show coffee chat with the director and in addition to being given great insights into the production and the "physicality of farce," we were also treated to coffee and cake! Bravo Arts Club"
—Mandy, North Vancouver
"Always enjoy the comedies you put on and this one did not disappoint! Timing was perfect and I loved the way they danced out at the finish!"
—Lynn, Vancouver
"Again a Sunday afternoon was filled with entertainment! Great show, the timing was very good, the antics really funny, the actors all in character. Even though the play was written for the 1960s it could still be relevant today. And I especially loved the uniforms, very authentic! Good job has been done by everyone"
—Shirley, North Vancouver
"One of the best we've seen so far with fantastic actors. We have been season ticket-holders/subscribers for about 5 or 6 years"
—Jennifer
"Wonderful from start to finish. The costumes and sets added so much to the wonderful acting. Can wait for our next night at the theatre!"
—Anne
"Incredible timing!!!! I laughed and laughed and laughed!!!! We've seen you in Studio 58 productions, Jonathan Young; very nice to see you again—and in such a successful role. Body language and facial expressions totally enhanced deliveries of Robert and Gretchen and Berthe; the other two flight attendants were also very effective in their roles. Many thanks for a fun-filled evening's entertainment!"
—Sandra & Michael, Vancouver
"As is always the case, the set was fantastic. Kudos to the designer and builders. Farces are fabulous and this met the mark with great casting, costumes, directing, etc. but the candles on the cake belong to "the maid". She looked the part, acted the part, sounded the part, etc. I firmly believe she was the glue that held the entire play together providing continuity and some resigned common sense remarks to a larger-than-life fiasco. Good work all"
—Lynne, Richmond
"A First Class Comedy. Lots of laughs and a great performance. We looked up the show from Perth and after flying long haul with China southern it was humorous to see the onstage antics of the stewardesses and the beleaguered friend trying to fix the almost impossible. Attended with Canadian friends and laughed until we cried. Well worth checking in"
—Doug, Wanneroo, Western Australia
"My wife and I haven't laughed as much in ages. An excellent night out on the town and we have recommended the play to everyone. Very well acted. Well done!"
—David, Vancouver
"Outstanding!
Hilarious!
Fantastic performances by ALL actors!
Great set!
Laughed until my stomach hurt...and beyond!
Have told many friends to attend.
May have to take my folks...should be extended showing dates.
As enjoyable as anticipated...and more!
Bravo!"
—Ron, Surrey
"One of the funniest play that I have seen in a long time. Even though it takes place 50 years ago, the topic is relevant to today's societal concerns. Would highly recommend to friends and have already pasted info on to a friend who wants to see it"
—Robb, North Vancouver
"My husband & I enjoyed this production immensely. Such high energy and so much humour! We cannot stop talking about it. We went for dinner after the play and met other people who had the pamphlet in their hands and we laughed and discussed our favorite actor and the special parts. The hostess at Earl's is now planning to see it with her friends as well as our friends near us. WELL DONE!"
—Penny, Delta
"A delightful evening with witty dialogue, brilliant acting, and the finest of pure physical humour. Do not miss this opportunity to laugh until it hurts, as I did, at Boeing-Boeing"
—Heather
"The best play of the year! The quality of the actors was outstanding. As season ticket holders, we hope that the 2014/2015 season has more plays of this quality and enjoyment!"
—Ron, Burnaby
"I haven't laughed this much, with such carefree abandon for years! Somehow the mix of characters, the absurd plot and the slapstick antics hit my funny bone in exactly the right spot. I highly recommend this 50's saga to lighten your February blues"
—Maureen, Vancouver
"We so enjoyed the show...great laughs, fast-paced, loved the acting... in fact all 6 actors hit the mark. Thanks for a wonderful experience"
—Yehudi, North Vancouver
"I found this play funny, fast-paced, and the actors beautifully talented and perfect in their casting. My friend and I had a rollicking good laugh and an enjoyable evening. Our season tickets are the best expenditure I made in 2012. My thanks to those who have chosen the plays, the actors, the director and the set directors/design.(I especially enjoyed the French Maid)"
—Rose, Burnaby

—Rose, Surrey
"This play was non-stop fun and laughs! I had heard about this play last year and have been waiting for it to start. The cast is brilliant, and I will never look at an air hostess the same way! This was a testament to well-honed male time management skills gone bad! Do not miss this production! You will leave with a big smile on your face!"
—Brenda, Port Coquitlam
"I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Haven't had so many laughs in a long time!"
—Phyllis, Richmond

—Carlyle, Vancouver
"Very funny. Play was performed very well, had a fantastic time!"
—James, Surrey
"This was absolutely the best staging of this play that I have ever seen. Of course, being fortunate to attend the talk by the Director, David Mackay certainly helped in the understanding of farce and in particular farce as it relates to this period piece. The physicality of farce is how David explained it. The talk helped but it was the superb acting by a stellar cast with their well-coached and probably intuitive timing so needed to pull off an "empty plot" play that really made the play so enjoyable to watch. You could not help but be totally drawn in to the action.
The set also was phenomenally right for this show and totally used by the actors. Kudos to all"
—Louise, White Rock
"I loved this play, the set was gorgeous, acting terrific, especially loved the maid. I was very pleased to have been at the lecture for an explanation on farce and on this play in particular. So glad it was redone and brought to the theatre again. Congratulations on another wonderful production"
—Maree, Vancouver
"Boeing-Boeing was delightful"
—Rochelle, Vancouver
"Great show. Laugh out loud funny. And the comic timing was perfect. What a good performance. I have already recommended it to two people. Thanks for a very enjoyable night"
—Janice, Abbotsford
"This farce was very well-presented by all of the actors. It was complete entertainment! Thanks"
—Catherine
"Excellent, energetic, entertaining!"
—Larry
"It was Fantastic!!! All 3 of us felt it was the best performance we have seen at the Stanley. Amazing acting, keeping us laughing and confused. It was shocking to watch the facial expressions and the cast brought us right into it. Everyone around us was laughing out loud or gasping in shock. Well Done! It's worth going for a second night!"
—Shawn, Langley
"I loved it! My sides ached from laughing. The physicality of the actors with the script added an extra level of hilarity. Special mention must go to Jonathon Young, Andrew McNee and Nicola Lipman. I will absolutely be recommending this show to others"
—Sharyn, Vancouver
"Excellent play. My granddaughter and I all enjoyed it"
—Dorothy, Vancouver
"This performance was a sheer delight!"
—Mark and Diane, Vancouver
"Boeing-Boeing is laugh out loud funny. The Sun's critic said it was dated but I don't agree. If you viewed it as a story set in the '60's it worked. My friends and I loved it!!! Laughed our heads off"
—Gillian, Vancouver
"Took my mother and a friend to see Boeing-Boeing and we loved it. It was an incredibly entertaining play, with lots of physical comedy and hilarious roles played tremendously well by all, but in particular, the maid and the friend, Robert, were excellent. We would recommend it to others to see and experience the fun and laughter of the dating difficulties that ensued in this comedy!"
—Linda, Vancouver
"The best show we have seen over the last 2 years. The cast did a wonderful job with Gretchen and Bertha being outstanding. Slapstick at its best"
—Wayne and Rosemary, Delta
"It was wonderful clean fun, lots of laughter, a make your day kind of show"
—Erika, Whistler
"It was an absolute uproarious delight. The 3 "stews" were sexy and gorgeous and Berthe's performance was perfection, French "ennui" to the nth degree and then descent into complete discombobulation at the turn of events. Bernard and Robert were superb—Bernard the clever and sophisticated cosmopolitan vs. the "rube" from Wisconsin. To watch them disintegrate with the circumstances was amazing. Their physical actions matched their professional acting to a "T" making this a perfect farce. It was an afternoon to remember and I gave them a standing ovation!"
—Tatiana, Vancouver
"Loved it! When I am laughing so hard the tears are running down my face…that makes for an evening that I will remember with a smile. Have told several friends they HAVE to go see this one. Can't wait for the next play…"
—Wendy, Surrey
"Loved it! Lots of laughs and fast-paced action. We recommend it"
—Judy, Abbotsford
"The 60s was a generation of universal cultural change driven by the youth. This play encompasses it all from decor, fashion, and freedom to a taste of Paris with a big dollop of humour!"
—Carla
"Side-splittingly funny. My Lufthansa-flights will never be the same. If it's true that laughing uses up calories, this show should be on everyone's weight-loss program. Great evening"
—Erna, Vancouver
"Hilarious. I would recommend to a friend. Kept you laughing long after the Play was over!!"
—Sharon, Coquitlam
"Loved it! Great cast, impeccable timing, laughed till I had tears in my eyes"
—Michael
"Tremendous! I have told many people that this is a MUST SEE! :)"
—Alan, Tsawwassen
"Wow, what a great play. Everything from the set to the costumes. Acting was superb and made for a hilarious evening. Thanks!"
—Richard, North Van
"Fantastic farce. We and most of our neighbouring guests were laughing out loud. One of our favorite Bard actress showed her multi talents. A wonderful way to spend an evening. The encore was as good as the play. A talented group of entertainers"
—Sandra, Richmond
"Absolutely the best, funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Superb job!!!"
—Lynne
"This is a must see! From timing to the well-developed characters, it doesn't get better than this!"
—Kathie
"The perfect cure for winter blues. Boeing-Boeing is (plotwise) undemanding for the audience, perhaps, who simply yield to laugh after laugh, but must be extremely demanding for the players. The comedic timing is perfect, and the level of physical comedy borders on the impossible. Definitely recommend it"
—Christine, Fort Langley
"A great funny production—kudos to the cast. We need more humorous/musical types of productions especially in this era of such stressful times"
—Phil, Burnaby
"This play was entertaining and fun from start to finish. Even though the plot was sort-of predictable, the players were quick and funny and kept the audience in stitches. Thanks for a great show"
—Sylvie, Vancouver
"Boeing-Boeing is among the best shows the Arts Club has presented at the Stanley Theatre in recent years. Special mention goes to Nicola Lipman, whose portrayal of Berthe was spot-on, as anyone who experienced the somewhat hostile services of domestics in France during the 1960s and 1970s can attest. Andrew McNee was a marvel, with every fleeting facial expression, physical tick, and vocal inflection inspired by the comic muse. The rest of the cast was also excellent. My only quibble was that Colleen Wheeler's booming portrayal of Gretchen was WAY over the top. But she still elicited the required laughs. I arrived at the Stanley expecting another pedestrian re-tread of an old play and ended up having a very amusing and satisfying night at the theatre"
—Daniel, Vancouver
"Loved it. Told all kinds of people to make sure they go. I thought it was one of the best productions I've seen at The Arts Club and I've been a subscriber for over 20 years!"
—Deborah

—Wendy, Vancouver
"Thought the play was wonderful—good pacing, great acting, all encompassing. Would definitely see it again. Very funny with interesting turns of plot"
—Jo-Ann, Vancouver
"We arrived late and ended up with front row seats. Your staff worried that we might miss some of the best parts, but I have to say that my 11 year old and my 33 year old daughters both loved it as much as I did. It was a great last minute decision and provided so many laughs"
—Lynn, Surrey
"Without a doubt, the best production I've seen in years: perfect timing, excellent execution, and hilariously acted! A definite must see. The audience was in stitches. I may even have to see it again…. This is my first year with season's tickets to the Arts Club after many years with the now defunct QE Playhouse"
—Lynn

—Debbie, Richmond
"My daughter and I have been attending the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage for some time. Both Julie and I enjoyed 'Boeing-Boeing.' We laughed all the way home. So much so, I purchased the same seats for my very special friend and myself for a Valentine’s Day gift. The only performance left with the same seat was one afternoon. The attendant on the phone had to go through each performance to find the seats I wanted. What service! What a wonderful performance!!!! Thank you! You have my support"
—Sharon, West Vancouver
"Stylish, clever, fast-paced and very funny. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the Arts Club production of Boeing-Boeing and strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun evening out on the town"
—Annette
"What an absolutely fabulous show! The play was bursting with wit, hijinks, punch drunk romance, and comedic foley. I couldn't take my eyes off the stage and I left the theatre hand in hand with my girlfriend, both of us grinning from ear to ear. I couldn't wait to sing it's praises to family and friends"
—Simon, Maple Ridge

"The Boeing-Boeing production was certainly one of the most entertaining & hilarious stage productions we've seen. The actors all played their parts so well especially Berthe, the hilarious maid. —Jackie, Surrey

—Kathy, Delta
"I have rarely seen a play where every character was completely amazing but Boeing-Boeing was one! I cannot think of any way any of the actors could have improved their sensational performance. Well done everyone!"
—Glen, Vancouver
"As a regular theatergoer with seasons tickets to the Stanley, my girlfriend could not attend this month’s offering. So I talked my non-theater going husband into joining me for Saturday's matinee of Boeing-Boeing. We laughed out loud and the time flew by! (No pun intended!) Being Italian, he did like Alitalia the best! As we left the theater, my husband proclaimed, "if all the plays you go to were like that, I would come to ALL of them!" Wow! Who knew! Thanks for a wonderful date with my guy!"
—Debbie, Surrey
"Once again a fabulous play in every way! My girlfriend said her cheeks hurt from so much laughing. I would love to see it again. I missed parts of the dialogue due to being in laughter mode myself!"
—Olivia, Richmond

—Pamela, Vancouver
"A wonderful comedy!!!!! Our favourite show so far of the seasons tickets. The acting is awesome!!!"

"We sat in the 3rd row and we felt we were part of the action. We were more tired that the actors, but in a very happy place. The maid was absolutely terrific and the rest of the cast supported each other so well that it kept us in stitches all night long. Very good job and we have recommended all our friends not to miss this event"

—Maria
"The play was excellent; so too were the actors. I will definitely tell friends it is well-worth seeing"
—Jeanette, Burnaby
"This is a fast-paced, laugh out loud, hilariously funny play. Everybody does a good job and has a good part but the person that holds it all together is Berthe the housekeeper. It ran for 19 years in Paris and 7 years in London so that says something about how good it is"
—Ruth, West Vancouver
"The funniest play ever!! Oh my my, we howled throughout the entire production…it was so funny! Every one of the actors was outstanding. What a hit!"

"What a fun time!!! As always, I am so impressed by the quality of the Arts Club productions...and yes, I am recommending this show to everyone I meet. If I get a chance, I will try to see it again...and Peter—I loved your tie :)"
—Alice, Kamloops
"Very clever, quick, and fun. Nicola Lipman and Andrew McNee are hilarious as the long suffering maid and overly supportive childhood friend. Colleen Wheeler was positively intimidating as the Lufthansa air hostess. Great set and costumes—hats off to Amir Ofek and Nancy Bryant. I was transported to the sixties and frankly....didn't want to leave"
—Debora, New Westminster
"I went with low expectations because of something I saw in the press, and came out a raving fan! Great production, perfect staging, delicious acting, flawless timing. We loved it"
—Michele, Vancouver
"It was great fun!"
—Estelle, Vancouver
"Normally, we are not fans of farce. Simply stated, "farce" tend to be....well, too farcical to be really funny by today's definitions. Not so with this clever, fast-paced comedy. In fact, there were many genuine belly laughs that made this show a pleasure. Kudos to the actors who made this predictable, but nonetheless very funny script work"
—Colin and Ingrid
"The play was delightful! Great acting, perfect timing and a fantastic look"
—Marian
"Hilarious comedy. Haven’t had such a good laugh in a long time! Congratulations, Arts Club & the cast of Boeing-Boeing"
—R. Barbour, Maple Ridge
"One of the best plays we've seen in a long while! Nicely paced with lots of sidesplitting laughs. The characters were well cast and the stage flow was appropriately timed. Thanks for a great evening's entertainment"
—Heather, Delta
"Loved it! I laughed out loud so many times. Probably one of the best plays I have seen in my brief experience as a theatre goer"
—Cathryn, Port Moody
"My husband and I loved the Arts Club production of Boeing-Boeing. Even though the play was written in the 60's, its dialogue and action felt very current. We laughed ourselves silly watching the zany goings-on. The actors were consummate professionals and their comedic timing was superb. We also liked the sensuality of the three stewardesses and the conclusion left us smiling inside"
—Chris, Vancouver
"Had the whole audience in stitches. Can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard for two hours straight! I would highly recommend you hop aboard and fly the skies with Boeing-Boeing"
—Leslie
"Absolutely, funny, fantastic, and brilliant. Loved it. A must-see. That is why I am Arts Club member. Never disappointed"
—Joao, Vancouver
"Berta, you crack me up. Great performances all around made for a lighthearted and thoroughly amusing afternoon. One of my favourite Arts Club performances to date"
—Kira, Vancouver
"This without question was one of the best comedies I’ve seen…. Please have more Boeing-Boeing made my day"
—Donna, Mission
"This hilarious comedy has the audience laughing from start to finish. In keeping with the traditions of farce, the plot is predictable, the situations ridiculous, and the ending improbable, but who cares? We are carried away by the speed of the action, the brilliance of the acting and the absolutely impeccable timing of every farcical moment. We leave the theatre smiling"
—Elizabeth, Surrey
"We thoroughly enjoyed the production: the humour of the script, the set, split second timing of the lines being delivered, and the doors opening and closing, the costuming. The bright colours of the flight attendants outfits, complete with purse and hats was striking and very effective against the white and black set"
—Shelley, Port Moody
"It was a wonderful surprise. Having never heard of Boeing-Boeing before I didn't know what to expect. It was very funny and the acting was superb. My partner said he would see it again"
—Lea, North Vancouver
"We very much enjoyed a good laugh with this production. Our favourite characters were Berthe and Robert, who we felt were priceless, but all characters worked well together to make for a very entertaining evening"
—Linda
"One of the best performances I have seen at the Arts Club. Laughed throughout"
—Tucker
"Fabulous, loved the set, loved the costumes, loved the accents, loved the actors & all that dialogue! I laughed my head off, had not done that in a long time and it felt so goooood"
—Lynn, North Vancouver
"Hilarious. A fast-paced, Three's Company-type romp. The understated humour of the maid contrasted well with the sometimes over-the-top rest of the cast humour (German fiancée). Don't get me wrong, over-the-top was a good thing; that is the whole idea. Jack, Chrissy, and Janet couldn't have done it any better. Highly recommend the play"
—Brian
"Brilliant and one of the best"
—Pam, North Vancouver
"Fantastic! And funny. A true ensemble cast. Wit meets physical comedy. We loved it!"
—Jocelyne, Delta
"We both loved it...laughed with it...and just enjoyed it so much..."

—Jerry, Abbotsford
"Great show! Lots of laughs! Fantastic casting! Excellent venue & facilities!"

"Having had tickets to both the Stanley and Granville Island stages for a few years, I can honestly say, this was one of the best plays we have enjoyed in a long time! Very funny, great actors/characters, and the audience was truly having a great time. I have recommended this to 3 different groups of people already and I just saw it last night. Congratulations on a fabulous production!"

"Without question the funniest play I've ever been to and I don't know how I made it through without disgracing myself"
